Abstract

The increase in female life expectancy over the last century has brought new challenges and opportunities for aesthetic health during aging. Although increasingly common, older women commonly face stigmas and barriers related to undergoing aesthetic procedures. The objective of this study was to identify and describe the main reasons, barriers, and fears associated with the search for aesthetic procedures among women between 40 and 60 years of age. This is a cross-sectional study, with online data collection, using a structured questionnaire. The sample included 79 women with an average age of 47.7 years, of whom 73.4% had already undergone aesthetic procedures. The most cited aesthetic procedures were skin cleansing, botulinum toxin, laser hair removal, and peels. Regarding the main reasons that led women to seek aesthetic procedures, the search to improve appearance (n=57, 72.1%) and the desire to improve self-esteem (n=41, 51.8%) stood out. Eighty percent of women reported wanting to undergo other cosmetic procedures that they had never done before. The main fears and barriers reported for undergoing procedures were cost and fear of adverse effects. Furthermore, trust in the professionals and their training were considered important points in undergoing cosmetic procedures. It was concluded that, although there is a growing acceptance of cosmetic procedures, many women still show caution regarding their performance.
