Abstract

This epidemiological study analyzed the distribution of Chikungunya fever cases in the state of Maranhão, from 2019 to 2023, and evaluated the relationship between the number of cases and socioeconomic and demographic factors based on the correlation with the Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI). Probable cases of CHIKF were collected in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) and transformed into maps using Quantum GIS software (QGIS). The HDI was obtained using the Human Development Atlas, and the correlation was performed using the Spearman correlation test using the Jamovi software, version 2.3.28. A progressive increase in CHIKF cases in the state was identified, especially in the years 2022 and 2023. The distribution of cases showed a consistent spatial pattern, with areas in the north, south and, east of the state being more affected, especially on Ilha de São Luís. The correlation between the number of CHIKF cases and the HDI showed a statistically significant association (ρ = 0.383; p < 0.001). The results demonstrate a progressive and relevant increase in the number of CHIKF cases in the state, suggesting the influence of the IDHM on this occurrence. Therefore, effective public health strategies are needed to reduce the incidence of the disease and improve the quality of life of the affected population.
