Performance analysis and standardization of activities in a packed distillation column

Distillation is the most widely used method for the separation of homogeneous liquid mixtures, occurring mainly in the process of purification of raw materials, separation of products and effluents treatment. In this work the separation efficiency of a distillation column filled with rasching rings subjected to perturbations in the reflux ratio was tested by analyzing the temperature and composition profiles. At the same time, operational and analytical activities were proposed to facilitate future studies and research on this equipment. The tower was operated on steady state in the separation of a binary mixture of ethanol and water. The tests were performed at an average base temperature of 92 ° C and the reflux ratio was varied in three situations: total reflux, 2: 1 and 1: 2. For each case samples of all the stages were taken, determining the concentrations of each current by pycnometry. The bulk ethanol compositions found in the top stream were 91%, 90% and 76%, for the cases of total reflux, reflux 2: 1 and reflux 1: 2, respectively. During the work, operational adaptations were proposed in the boil up, in the condenser, in the thermal insulation system and in the samples remove, besides a proposal of standardization in the pycnometry procedure. It is concluded that the studied distillation column presents a high separation efficiency for the mixture and the conditions tested, with coherent results for each reflux ratio, being able to carry out future studies.
